Much of Southern California’s coastal improvement is related to industry and defense needs, of course, and some is intended to enhance certain recreational use, as is the case with fishing piers, pleasure boat harbors and the jetties in Newport Beach (Slide #16) that protect against the littoral drift of sand for beachgoers.
