OASES was an exhibition of artwork that responded to the unusual boundaries that separate public and private domains in the city of Los Angeles. The artworks’ installation, on the grounds of the Lazy J Hollywood, was intended to take advantage of the unique features of the property, itself a kind of urban oasis.

The property is comprised of several simple ‘bungalows’ and a two-storey stucco box, housing an apartment on each floor, plus a half-acre of well vegetated, park-like grounds, surrounded appropriately by a chain-link fence. The bungalows, set among a small dilapidated barn, a decorative pond, a small orchard, and other features, have been rehabbed into live/work spaces and are now inhabited by artists.

Using a provided map, viewers were invited to locate and enjoy artworks and artifacts situated throughout the property which responded to thoughts of private desires and public responsibilities within the landscape of a late-stage democracy.
